RICHMOND — 2019   — Describing the political scene in the United States going into the presidential election next year presents unique challenges.  It can be difficult to describe others who fail to describe themselves adequately.  The large pool of Republican candidates last round is gone although the reason for it being large is not.  There are still seething ambiguities in the party definition more contentious than obvious.
No one goes there anymore, it's too crowded.

Yogi Berra (and others!)

A large pool of Democratic candidates might hope to duplicate the success of large pools.  That might involve more indicating what they are not later than what they are now.

It seems likely many Trump voters were not sure what they were getting other than "not Hillary."  "Not Trump" just might be a winning plan for Democrats.

The special section for the last round of presidential campaigns in 2016 began with an article about mob rule.  This special section this round begins with a similar article in the light of subsequent developments.
