"Hello, Superfetus, how's it going? How does construction work suit you?" Mark saw Superfetus having lunch. Superfetus was working construction on an expansion to the police precinct building.
"My large size is handy. I can lift things to the second and third floors. It's not all so well, there are places only smaller people can work. I suppose there is a place for everyone. It keeps a roof over my head."
"It's the roof of an aircraft hangar though. How do you afford an aircraft hangar just working construction?" Many details of the life of Superfetus were a source of curiosity to many people including Mark.
"It's not as difficult as you might think. The company that owned it is changing their business model. They need all new facilities. Part of it might be too that they have pity on me because where else would I sleep?"
Superfetus had gotten in trouble for taking rest in some other places. Mark was glad that problem was all resolved at least, but there were more. "Have you heard what happened at the hospital? Much exercise equipment worth thousands of dollars was destroyed."
"Does Sgt O'Leary think I had anything to do with it?"
"Did you?"
"People in hospitals only help others in dire need. Why would anyone want to hurt them?"
Mark noticed that Superfetus did not answer the question, but he did not want to make a point of it without O'Leary present. Mark had no warrant.
Superfetus thought it might be a good time to change the subject. "What about you? Are you a detective yet?"
"I want a degree in Criminal Justice first."
"Is it required?"
"Not really, but a lot of people think it's a good idea. So do I for the most part, but I don't see why I need a course in anthropology."
"Do they discuss the Rigonatocki? I heard about that. It sounds interesting."
"The professor cares more about it than I do."
Many people had heard about the penalty the Rigonatocki had imposed on a person who entered deer hunting grounds without permission, cutting off his foot. Superfetus had too. "Cutting off a foot though, that's just evil, right?"
"The professor understands that. He says it's important to realize that what works here might not work there. Before there was a network of jails justice was often more brutal, swift and far less than exact. Government depends very much on other social pressures and further investigations. Without those government can turn brutal."
"Yes, I studied that. American democracy won't work without a well educated and responsible populace." Superfetus was a quick study, but at local libraries not Irish primary schools as he claimed.
Mark agreed, "The more educated people are, the less pressure it takes to obtain their sensible cooperation, and it's less necessary to ask for their cooperation since they anticipate when certain things must be done."
